it was about 90% rainwater, 10% sewage. the water spilled over the wall into the sand and flowed all the way out to the ocean. crews say they used a bleach mixture to disinfect the promenade before opening it. but the beach will be closed for up to a week. >> just so people don't come in contact with it or have their dogs in it. then we'll go ahead and do the water quality testing, which we do normally, to make sure the bacteria levels are low enough to reopen it. >> reporter: they are also taking data and investigating the pressure level and what caused the backup. crews posted signs today warning residents and surfers. some people said they were concerned about the contamination. >> because it's pollution and you can get sick from it. yeah, it does. as you see, there's nobody in the water. >> reporter: and we do have a

live look now for you from news chopper 2 of the scene. they are cleaning up. they expect to get lab results back tomorrow that should indicate whether it's safe for people to go into the water. but, again, back here live, the great highway closed for about four blocks between balboa and fulton. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 news. in san jose, police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a man in san jose this morning. the collision took place just after 6 a.m. on allen rock avenue near the intersection with jackson avenue. police say the man was crossing about 30 feet away from the crosswalk and died at the scene. investigators say they don't have a whole lot to go on. >> all we have on that vehicle is it's a dark-colored sedan, unknown make or model. we're still talking to witnesses right now. >> a second vehicle also hit the man. that driver stopped and

cooperated with police. earlier this morning, divers recovered the body of a 59-year-old man from a quarry in oakland. he apparently fell from a cliff above. this is all right next to the rockridge shopping center. authorities say andrew malyon's roommate told them he had gone to look for his cat last night in the rain and never returned. the fire department called in the sheriff's dive team and just after midnight, they located him, underwater, after a five-hour search. >> it's raining and it's wet back there, so this person may have gone back and looked for the cat many times, but today, because of the weather, he may have lost his footing and fallen in the water. >> search crews say they found his cat on the hillside, unharmed. oakland police are searching for a light blue cadillac. a man who abducted and raped a woman. police say it happened yesterday while the woman was walking on the 5900 block of international boulevard. the man offered her a ride. then he sexually assaulted her

at knifepoint. the woman was able to escape and flag down help. trucks trying to deliver or pick up goods have been backed up for miles. eric rasmussen is at the port tonight with the frustration that carried over today. eric? >> reporter: even here at 5:00, we're seeing a fairly steady stream of traffic. the drive from the freeway over here to the terminals normally takes a matter of minutes but this morning truckers waited for hours, because nobody could drop off or pick up anything here yesterday. it was a traffic jam at the port of oakland, with time and money on the line. >> we waited till they opened up. what can we do? chopper 2 captured this view of semitrucks, backed up for miles this morning, all waiting to get to terminals shut down by workers. driver grace hemingway says it cost her a day's pay and

possibly her thanksgiving. >> i'm not gonna make it back. i gotta go clear to reno. >> reporter: we got inside one of these containers to show you just how big it is. thousands of these go in and out of the part of oakland every day. we know today was far busier than a normal day. we're talking a busy week in general, because of the holiday shipping season and the fact that we're facing a large harvest of numerous california agricultural products. the port of oakland says its seaport alone is responsible for $8 million a day in economic activity, but longshoremen made no apologies for staying off the job in support of fellow union workers. >> when people ask for help, they're gonna get it. if it comes on christmas eve or new year's, or the day before thanksgiving, if workers are in trouble, they're gonna be there for them, no matter what. >> reporter: the port says the extra traffic out here could continue into next week.

but today a spokesperson told me there should be no significant impact on goods getting to all the stores on friday. ktvu channel 2 news. the city of richmond will take the lead in the oversight of the work to rebuild the damaged unit at chevron's refinery there. the unit was heavily damaged during a fire back in august. the city council voted to take a close look at the repairs being made. all documentation will be shared with the public and chevron will be ordered to disassemble and redo any work that city officials say is unsatisfactory. chevron has said it will repair the unit to previous standards but says there will not be any major upgrades. tonight, a growing backlash against a holiday shopping trend many call gray thursday. why one retail expert says shoppers really did this to themselves. rob? >> reporter: the kickoff to the holiday shopping season has traditionally been the day after thanksgiving, but here at

affect more black friday shopping plans, coming up at 6. unemployment fell slightly last week but still remains high because of the impact of superstorm sandy. two weeks ago, superstorm sandy pushed applications to an 18- month high because the storm caused temporary layoffs in construction, hotel work, restaurants and other industries. a new survey finds u.s. consumer confidence has now soared to its highest level in five years. the university of michigan's consumer sentiment index rose .1% this month to 82.7%. 30% of consumers are also optimistic that the unemployment rate will fall over the next twelve months. but many expressed concerns about the looming fiscal cliff that includes tax heights and spending cuts that are set to

happening now, one of the more unusual thanksgiving dinner traditions going on as we speak in sausalito. a restaurant there is expecting to feed more than 1,000 people tonight and they've been doing this for more than 20 years

now. our health and science editor, john fowler, here with a decidedly nontraditional food event. >> reporter: we're in avatar's in sausalito. and we're here for a 24-year tradition started by the man whose photo you can see right there. avatar was the founder of this restaurant. he decided many years ago that it would be a great idea, on the thanksgiving eve, to offer free sit-down turkey dinners to anybody who wanted to come. now, the idea here is that anyone who wants to come can do this. last year, they had over 1100 people come here and get a free sit-down meal and drink. right now, this is kumar. this is your restaurant. it's a small restaurant. how can you afford to do this? >> well, if you believe in faith and god and the

community, this is how it works. and once you do it, it works. we were supposed to open at 4:00. but we did 3:00 and the people started coming. as you can see, the people are loving it. >> you also have a lot of volunteers? >> bartenders, waitresses, they're all working. >> and the food is somewhat unusual. these are pumpkin and turkey enchiladas, not your usual thanksgiving fare. many of the people we've been talking to have been coming here for years and years. the idea is this is all free. they'll be open here till about 9:30 tonight. kumar says he has plenty of food, come by! in sausalito. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> you see the bounty there in marin county. but the nation's food banks say they have less to offer this thanksgiving. in the past year, the federal

government has cut its contributions to roughly a third and many food banks report that donations are down. congress is considering cuts to the food stamp program, making thousands of people ineligible. food bank volunteers say it's a perfect storm directly affecting many americans, leaving them without food. about half the people receiving food stamps now are actually above the poverty rate, so we've expanded this to become more of a middle class entitlement. >> congress is expected to take up the proposed food stamp cuts after the thanksgiving break. we'll take you to a san francisco thanksgiving tradition. the annual event that feeds thousands. some richmond and el cerrito residents are relieved to hear that a 24-hour wal-mart grocery store is not coming to their neighborhood. a grocery outlet store will go

there instead on the san pablo property. the grocery outlet store will close at 9 p.m. this afternoon, a bankruptcy judge in new york approved hostess's plan to shut down. that means twinkies and many other famous brands are headed for the auction block. hostess failed to work out a contract deal with its thousands of employees. the judge called for a quick and orderly shutdown so that other companies can move fast to buy rights to buy some of the famous products offered by hostess. during its 82-year history hostess survived the great depression, several wars and countless low-carb diet fadz. facebook is considering putting an end to its practice of letting users photo on changes to its privacy policies. the company said the voting system has become ineffective. facebook says it will continue to let users comment on proposed updates and will notify users of significant changes to its privacy policy.

facebook is proposing to combine user data with that of recently acquired photo sharing. facebook says sharing information will help provide, understand and improve services with its own company as well as its partners and affiliates. fremont police are trying to find the owners of an elaborate briefcase and wedding album. the shiny gold case was found outside the kinder care child care center in fremont last night. the front of the case says happy wedding, 12-04-2008. inside, the case was filled with wedding pictures. if you recognize the suitcase or the bride and groom, you are asked to contact fremont police. back to our bay area weather. that overnight storm blew through and we are left with gorgeous. >> that rain did come down hard

last night, especially in san francisco where the storm drains are overflowing. we will see a few sprinkles lingering in the north valley tonight but that's about it. up around sacramento, i've had reports of some drizzle in some of these areas and up in this area. but for the most part, we're starting to clear out, as gasia mentioned. that means the ground is wet. some places got over an inch and a half of rain. the ground is yet. the dew points are going to be higher. and the overnight lows, because the skies are clearing, are going to be cooler. that all combines for valley fog and it all comes together during the big holiday travel day, tomorrow. if you're traveling from fresno to stockton, north to sacramento, patchy fog in the early morning hours and it will be persistent throughout the entire bay area holiday weekend, because the conditions are going to be right. it rained hard for a time and a lot of this rain came down in

just a short period, so it really did feel like a lot. in the mountains, the roadways are cleared obviously, but they did get plenty of snow. the winter weather advisory is expired if you're traveling up on 50 or 80. the weather system is now going this way. high pressure is coming in over the top. and what that does is set us up with the perfect conditions for fog formation. so overnight lows tonight, cool. dew points, high. so temperature 40 in santa rosa. dew point around 42 degrees. so you'll find fog forming up there out in the santa rosa area, out towards napa and vallejo. tomorrow, because of the severe clear we're going to have -- it's going to be nice when you wake up. i think the fog is going to be pretty persistent, so the big weather story tomorrow morning for the big travel day, be ready. inland bay valleys for dense fog.

san francisco police say they believe an arsonist is responsible for a fire that destroyed four cars this morning. the fire broke out at 5 a.m. at home near engle street. firefighters say the smell of gas was strong and a gas cap was missing from a tank. the cars included two vintage automobiles. >> oh, yes. i am pretty lucky, thanks to god. still shake. it was scary, man. >> how high were the flames? >> kind of like by the gate, probably 12 feet, something like that. >> police towed the cars. investigators will look more closely for clues about the

fire. an antioch apartment went up in flames at 5 a.m. on delta boulevard. ten people were displaced when it caught fire on monday. firefighters believe that embers from the first fire ignited insulation and sparked this morning's fire. the earlier fire was ruled accidental. toyota is recalling about 150,000 mid-sized pickup trucks the tacoma trucks come from the 2001 to 2004 model years. they have a rust problem with the plates and have a danger of tires falling onto the roads. they mainly affect cold-water states. in seven minutes, the new experience being offered at this year's auto show in san francisco, the car that you can actually drive around the building. plus the interesting new option that volvo is now offering. the company involved in

that his alleged accomplice made his first court appearance. a shackled 26-year-old jonathan dawson shuffled into superior court this afternoon, keeping his head down, rarely changing his somber express. he was captured and arrested friday night, after police say he and another man went on an armed robbery crime spree, then shot and killed rory petford. the other suspect remains unidentified and on the run. today, wolbanks was charged with numerous counts, including first-degree murder with special circumstance. the carjacking. >> that potentially is a life without the possibility of parole or a death penalty charge, so there's not much more you can do to somebody after that. >> you will be held without

bail. >> reporter: he did not speak in court. afterwards, his attorney had only a short comment when i asked him what he wanted to say an above of his client. >> extremely remorseful. >> reporter: san jose police say the public has responded to the department's plea for more help with the community, but so far it hasn't helped the investigation. >> no new leads. nothing has panned out as of yesterday. >> reporter: he is scheduled to return to court on december 5 to enter a plea. there is still a $20,000 reward being offered for information leading to the capture and conviction of his alleged accomplice. breaking news right now from san francisco. news chopper 2 is overhead at 11th and howard in san francisco. here's what we know. there was some type of incident involving a manhole cover. one person has been taken to the hospital. no word on that person's

condition. again, this is happening near 11th and howard and you can see that the streets there are blocked off, so be careful if your way home takes you there that area. this is not far from mission and south van ness. one person was taken to the hospital. police at uc berkeley are investigating a big computer theft on campus. they apparently kicked open a door at a computer lab and made off with 10 computers from the school of journalism. campus police are warning students and staff to lock up valuable equipment and to engrave electronic items with an id number. the men arrested for burglarizing steve job's home pleaded no contest this morning. 35-year-old mcfarland now faces more than seven years in prison. he admitted to burglarizing and taking a list of things from

jobs' home, including a walt containing steve's driver's license and credit card. a man from contra costa has been arrested for robbing a bank in concord last week. police say the suspect robbed the us bank in concord on november 13. after an investigation, concord police detectives identified a suspect. he is 24-year-old clayton hill of concord. officers tracked downhill yesterday afternoon. they found him in a car on highway 4, pulled him over and took him into custody. it's a thanksgiving tradition that has nothing to do with turkey. the annual san francisco auto show starts tomorrow. tom vacar went inside today and tom tells us why this year will be a much more hands-on experience for car fans. >> reporter: there really is something for everyone, from custom builts to museum classics. the displays are bigger this

we continue to follow developing news happening right now in san francisco. news chopper 2 still live over the scene of what we understand was an explosion in a manhole, in the market district. we understand that one person was transported to the hospital with injuries. we do not know yet how severe those injuries are. we have one injury reported so far. there are a number of crews in this area. when we first showed you this picture, we did not see any traffic going through. you see an awful lot of police and fire kreus.

looks like 11th and howard is still pretty much shut down, as the investigation is really just beginning. we have gotten in touch with pg&e and are waiting for a response from them on specifically what happened in the explosion. we are also keeping our news chopper 2 over the scene. there are cars coming. the intersection is very, very slow and much of it is essentially taped off. so if you have the option of avoiding 1 1th and howard, i would do it. we'll have more information coming up at 6. some 5.5 million californians are traveling for this holiday weekend. eastbound and westbound 80 just jam-packed. it looks like air travel has been a lot smoother than what's happening there on the roads, ken. >> reporter: yes, gasia. let's take a look inside the

new terminal 2. if you take a look, there's hardly any line at all. this is one of the busier travel days of this holiday week. but you may not know it by looking at the lines. take a look at interstate 80 this afternoon and compare that wait to the tsa lines at sfo. >> this is not that busy like before. >> reporter: the travelers we talked to at sfo said they had experienced no significant waits or problems but that was not true this morning. some had delays of several hours, with numerous flights cancelled yesterday due in part to rain. but this afternoon, it was mostly clear. few passengers seemed to be in a rush. >> our flight doesn't leave until 8:00 tonight, so we're not in a panic. >> reporter: the number of people flying out of sfo was greater this thanksgiving than

last. >> it's up about 3% since last year, but everything is operating smoothly. >> reporter: those people choosing to drive make up 90% of the holiday travelers, according to aaa. that's about 4.7 million californians. paula mcneil is not joining them. >> i'm staying local, yes, i am. the high gas prices was the one that did it for me. >> reporter: gas prices are higher than a year ago but less than they were at the start of october. >> a little bit but not too  much for me to put that $150 in my tank and just go to vegas. >> reporter: we're told about 60,000 passengers are expected to depart today from sfo with friday being the busiest travel day of this holiday week here at the airport. at sfo, ktvu channel 2 news. let's check now to live cameras on the way to tahoe. you can see interstate 80.

as for weather-related road conditions, roads are clear, traffic getting through really well. the winter weather advisory expired earlier today. no chains are required as of now, but cal tran recommends that drivers do go ahead and carry chains. full-body x-ray scanners and luggage x-rays may damage glucose monitors. health experts recommend carrying a letter detailing all of the medical supplies that someone with diabetes needs to carry on board. they also recommend if someone wears an insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor that the letter specifically state these devices should not be x- rayed at all. instead, the devices should be hand-checked. the exodus from the use of blackberries by government agencies continues today. the national transportation safety boards says it is switching to iphones. fishes claim the blackberries,

are now failing at crucial moments. the defense department, immigration and customs enforcement and the transportation security administration have already made the switch. the department of agriculture is about to change how it makes sure turkeys are safe to eat. the usda is almost ready to roll out new poultry inspection rules. the trade-off? fewer usda inspectors on poultry lines checking for discoloration or other obvious problems. >> the safety and quality of the poultry is going to be questionable. >> the usda tells our d.c. bureau the new rules will make poultry safer to eat. president obama continued a white house tradition, pardoning two turkeys who might otherwise have been on the dinner table this evening.

an extension. some environmentalists say it's time to go. earl is asking salazar to abide by the 1972 lease agreement with the national park service. >> the main problem now is you are changing the nature of this pristine area with noise, with structures. >> it has major implications and that's why i'm spending the kind of time, understanding all the dimensions of the decision before me. >> reporter: decision time in drakes bay. both sides will know by the end of next week. president obama's health care law is moving forward. this week the obama administration laid out a package of rules that included a ban on denying coverage to people with preexisting conditions. many americans don't understand all the changes coming with the affordable care act. health experts say if people don't enroll it could increase premiums for those who do have

insurance. 20% of californians are uninsured. a new report shows a sharp drop in the number of u.s. abortions. it shows the biggest decline in a decade. experts estimate it represents almost 40,000 fewer abortions. we just showed you u a live look on interstate 80, all those cars making that thanksgiving holiday. but bill, can you imagine if that rain were still here now? >> i think a lot of people blow out on wednesday night. we had a horrible night. we mentioned that many people will travel today and tomorrow. let's check out the forecast here, as we go into tonight. you can see that we've got a

few clouds heading north here. the clouds stay up there basically and we're in this clear zone, right about here, and there's no rain falling and we're getting a break. the forecast for the next few days will be dry and with that, we can look at the rain averages. 121 in san francisco. in san jose, they lag a little bit. it's nice to see those numbers considering last year, the numbers at this time and much of the season were below average. thanksgiving day looks great. partly sunny, mostly sunny. the thing tomorrow will be the valley fog in the early morning hours. the forecast will be for the fog in the mornings and these are the spots. and you know the spots, right? you know the north bay valley and south down to the livermore valley. i don't think we'll see fog at the san francisco airport but the fog will be there in those inland valley. this high pressure center sets us up or puts us in a position where that fog will continue to

keep doing what it does. we'll keep seeing this pattern repeat through the weekend. so the forecast tomorrow, you see this strip here, what kind of cloud could that be? it's fog and you can see that because of the way it lines up against the west slope of the sierra nevada. you can kind of tell what is fog and what is high clouds, so what we're seeing here is fog in the central valley. this is tomorrow morning. model is not doing a great job, but i expect we'll see fog in all those places. the forecast highs tomorrow, mild and temperatures actually on the warm-up as we head into the holiday week and weekend with temperatures getting near 70 as we go into the saturday and sunday period, so a really nice-looking five-day forecast. and i am so happy it's not raining now. >> the overnight rains, crisp

this newscast, happening in san francisco, right at 11th and howard in the south of market district. it looks like a few of those emergency vehicles have cleared away but the situation still is very heavily impacted there at that intersection. we just spoke with san francisco fire. previously we told you that one person was injured as a result of this incident. now san francisco fire department is telling us that person was injured in a separate incident, not because of the manhole explosion. we are reaching out to pg&e, trying to find out if it was perhaps some sort of transformer explosion or what exactly caused the explosion. we will have more information coming up at 6. there are new details tonight about osama bin laden's burial at sea. bin laden's body was washed, wrapped in a white sheet and then placed in a weighted bag, according to a senior navy officer. the e-mails also reveal that traditional islamic procedures were followed and that only a small group of the leadership
